Special Edition - Overview
There is a recognised lack of international literature on advising and tutoring in Higher Education (HE), particularly in the UK context. Advising and tutoring is of great importance internationally and, in that regard, global research can help to build a credible evidence base for our practice and to acknowledge the centrality of high quality advising and tutoring to teaching, learning and student success. The promotion of personalised, even individualised, learning is now at the heart of most HE institutional missions, a large number of which are currently reviewing their strategic and operational tutoring infrastructure. Indeed, agendas align worldwide to both expand and diversify HE and there is a firm focus, globally, on understanding the factors that drive student persistence, student outcomes and employability. Tackling these issues effectively will require strategic, connected, purposeful and efficient ways of working across recognised institutional and international boundaries. This significant shift in the national and international learning, teaching and student experience policymaking landscape cannot be addressed without due regard to the strategic placement of advising and tutoring within universities, on an international scale, in a bid to continuously improve HE learning cultures. Recently, Effective Personal Tutoring in Higher Education was published, this is the first UK monograph on the topic in twelve years, promoting a more evidence-based approach to practice and situating advising and tutoring within the wider, international literature on student retention and success. Nevertheless, there are still a number of gaps in our knowledge and many fruitful avenues for future research in this area, all of which can help to acknowledge and articulate the ongoing importance of advising and tutoring to fostering independence of thought and enthusiasm for lifelong learning. We can also learn much by embracing international approaches to research and best practice in advising. The aim of this collection of articles is to address the need to further stimulate discussion in this field whilst addressing some of the most pressing gaps in the current literature, promoting further international research in this area and connecting several disparate HE policymaking agendas. The collection will consider the impact of high-quality advising and tutoring practices and is intent on advancing evidence that advising and tutoring is fundamental to helping universities achieve their strategic ambitions for student success. We will, therefore, feature a number of edited contributions from research articles, review articles, reflective essays, opinion pieces and evaluative case studies.
Manuscript Submission Process & Author Guidelines
Your abstract has been deemed to be suitable for the special edition and we would now like to invite you to work up a full manuscript according to the timeline indicated below. Please note that encouragement to proceed to a full submission does not guarantee publication. Manuscripts received will be subject to full peer review. We ask that all authors read and adhere to the Frontiers Author Guidelines when working on their Manuscript as this will save a significant amount of time in the editorial and proofreading process. There are several important items to note and we have summarized them here, but please note that a full read of the Author Guidelines is expected:
- Authors must register with the Frontiers before submitting an article. If you submitted an abstract via the Frontiers system then you have already completed the registration process.
- If you are working on your Manuscript in MS Word, please use the Frontiers Word Templates which have been pre-formatted in the appropriate manuscript style: http://www.frontiersin.org/Design/zip/Frontiers_Word_Templates.zip
- Please pay close attention to the word limits for the article type you are submitting. Whilst there is a maximum word limit of 12,000 words for research articles, we ask that special edition authors submit manuscripts of between 5,000 and 8,000 words. The word count includes text, footnotes and citations but does not include abstracts, acknowledgements or references in the bibliography.
- The entire document should be single-spaced and must contain page and line numbers in order to facilitate the review process. It must be typed in MS word (ideally using the template referred to above).
- The title is written in title case, centred, and in 16 point bold Times New Roman font at the top of page. Headings and subheadings need to be defined in Times New Roman, 12, bold. The text of the abstract section should be in 12 point normal Times New Roman. The body text is in 12 point normal Times New Roman.
- The manuscript should be organised by appropriate headings and sub-headings.
- You must include an author contribution statement, the purpose of which is outlined in the Frontiers Author Guidelines.
- When you submit your manuscript, you will be required to briefly summarize in 200 words your manuscript’s contribution to, and position in, the existing literature of your field. This should be written avoiding any technical language or non-standard acronyms.
- Please keep all abbreviations and acronyms to a minimum.
- All citations in the text, figures or tables must be in the reference list and vice-versa. The references should only include articles that are published or accepted. For accepted but unpublished works use "in press" instead of page numbers. Website urls should be included as footnotes. Any inclusion of verbatim text must be contained in quotation marks and clearly reference the original source.
- In-text citations should be called according to the surname of the first author, followed by the year. For works by 2 authors include both surnames, followed by the year. For works by more than 2 authors include only the surname of the first author, followed by et al., followed by the year. Please also include page numbers in the in-text citations.
- For the reference list: please provide the names of the first six authors followed by et al. and the DOI when available.
- Please consult the Frontiers Author Guidelines for reference examples.
- All figures, tables, and images will be published under a Creative Commons CC-BY licence and permission must be obtained for use of copyrighted material from other sources (including re-published/adapted/modified/partial figures and images from the internet). It is the responsibility of the authors to acquire the licenses, to follow any citation instructions requested by third-party rights holders.
- The maximum number of figures and tables for all article types are shown in the Summary Table in the Author Guidelines. Frontiers requires figures to be submitted individually, in the same order as they are referred to in the manuscript, the figures will then be automatically embedded at the end of the submitted manuscript. Please ensure that each table and figure is mentioned in the text and in numerical order.
- Details of all funding sources must be provided in the funding section of the manuscript including grant numbers, if applicable.
- Material submitted to Frontiers must comply with the following policies to ensure ethical publication of academic work:
- Original content and duplicate publication: Frontiers only publishes original content. Authors confirm the submission of original content in the Terms & Conditions upon submission. Manuscripts submitted to Frontiers must not have been previously published or be under consideration for publication elsewhere, either in whole or in part. If an article has been previously submitted for publication elsewhere, Frontiers will only consider publication if the article has been definitively rejected by the other publisher(s) at the point of submission to Frontiers.
- Fabrication and falsification: Frontiers opposes both the fabrication of data or images (i.e. fake or made up data) and the falsification of data or images (i.e. the intentional misrepresentation or deceptive manipulation of data).
- Plagiarism: Plagiarism occurs when an author attempts to present previously published work as original content. Every manuscript submitted to Frontiers is screened for textual overlap by the software CrossCheck, powered by iThenticate. Manuscripts found to contain textual overlap are not considered for publication by Frontiers.
- Frontiers follows the ICMJE recommendations on the protection of research participants, which state that a right to privacy should not be violated without informed consent. We require non-essential identifiable details to be omitted from all manuscripts, and written informed consent will be required if there is any doubt that anonymity can be maintained.
It is the responsibility of the researchers and authors to ensure that these principles are complied with, including the obtaining of written, informed consent.
The Editorial Process
When receiving Manuscripts for inclusion in the Special Edition, the Guest Editors will be using a rubric to ensure best-fit with the overall themes. A copy of the rubric has been provided with this document and it is intended to be of use to authors when drafting their manuscript.
